Samuel Eto’o – Cameroonian, Soccer
His standing on the pitch may have begun to wane, but Cameroonian international Samuel Eto’o continues to be a major player both within and outside the African market.
While his commercial value has undoubtedly dropped since 2010, when he was the face of the World Cup and the continent – indeed, his was the face used on the South Africa 2010 official tournament poster – he remains arguably Africa’s most recognisable soccer player and a leading brand ambassador for German sportswear giant Puma as well as car manufacturer Ford.
Having won the Uefa Champions League with Barcelona and Internazionale in consecutive seasons, at 30, Eto’o still has a number of years in Europe’s premier club competition ahead of him. He is also likely to once again find himself cast as the poster boy of another globally noted sporting event sooner rather than later, with two African Nations Cups in successive years on the horizon. The African confederation’s international soccer tournament will be jointly hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in 2012 before shifting – as things stand, at least – to Libya the following year, and with all three host nations lacking a notable player, Eto’o – now every inch the political figure due to his outspoken views on racism in the game – will be marketed as one of the event’s major selling points, both in Africa and throughout the world.
