The Minnesota Twins may not be a big-market club or even much of a draw outside of their home state – witness how ESPN have opted to televise just one Twins game during the first two months of the 2011 MLB season – but despite this perception, in Joe Mauer, the Twin Cities franchise possess one of the sport’s most popular young stars.
Mauer went from strength to strength in 2010, capturing his third successive All-Star selection, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award. His impressive displays have been matched by commercial success off the field, with his number seven jersey Major League Baseball’s second biggest seller throughout the United States in 2010. The catcher trails only to legendary New York Yankees shortshop Derek Jeter in shirt sales, this despite the Twins only ranking ninth when it comes to overall merchandise sales. It’s not just Mauer’s jersey that continues to sell well – having signed with IMG in 2009, the St. Paul-born 27-year-old is starting to prove pretty good at selling his image too. SportsPro
