n 2010, the likeable Northern Irishman became the first player since Tiger Woods to win a PGA Tour event before reaching the age of 21, adding to his European Tour victory from Dubai in 2009 by beating Phil Mickelson by four strokes at the Quail Hollow Championship in May. Later in the year, he became the first-ever player to appear alongside Woods on the box cover of popular EA Sports videogame Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’11.
Back on the course, McIlroy cemented his position as a perennial Major favourite by shooting the lowest ever first round score in the 150-year history of the Open Championship, a nine under par at St Andrews. He followed that by repeating his 2009 achievement of finishing third at the 2010 PGA Championship. Having been a crucial cog in Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning machine, only a cataclysmic meltdown on the final round of this year’s Masters, having led since day one, prevented him from becoming the second-youngest winner of the coveted green jacket.
