Bolt’s personality is a huge asset – in an era of the taciturn and the tepid, here is a broad-smiling giant with an insatiable appetite for life – but his appeal transcends even that. Athletics will never recover its innocence, but it has at last regained the confidence to celebrate, rather than suspect, the extraordinary. Some athletes are described as bigger than their sport. Bolt might be bigger still. More than any sportsman in living memory, he offers the promise of something historic with every competitive appearance. His achievements have drawn childish gasps of wonder from Olympic greats. The barriers some of those champions claim he may break – 43 seconds in the 400 metres or nine metres in the long jump – once seemed like playground fantasies, but Bolt has consistently made the impossible harder to define.
