A figurehead for the homeschool movement in the US – he became the first homeschooled athlete to be nominated for the Heisman Trophy, let alone win it – the clean-cut, clean-living Tebow, whose father was a pastor in the Philippines, also became the pin-up boy and an eloquent spokesman for conservative Christians in the country. His keen eye for a marketing coup was on show throughout his collegiate career in the biblical verses he wrote into his eye black: ‘John 3:16’, scrawled on his face during the 2009 BCS Championship game, drew 94 million hits on Google in the aftermath of the match. Although a move to home state franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars – a marketer’s dream – didn’t materialise, Tebow was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round in 2009. SportsPro
