Breaking records was nothing new for the quarterback, who threw a record number of touchdowns in his freshman season. But his NFL career was almost finished before it even started – having opted out of the 2009 NFL draft for another season with Oklahoma, Bradford suffered two severe injuries that cast doubt on his entire future.
Still, his promise was enough to make him first pick in the 2010 draft, when the St Louis Rams handed him a contract worth US$78 million over six years. Publicly refusing all endorsements to concentrate on his game paid off both on the field – he put all doubts about his fitness to bed by becoming just the third rookie quarterback in NFL history to start every regular-season game, and broke Peyton Manning’s record for most completed passes by a rookie quarterback in the process – and off it, ensuring that his value to anyone who could persuade him to sign to their brand shot up. That exclusivity is combined with an accommodating nature, at least when the price is right: Bradford’s first endorsement saw him shave his head to promote a deal with Axe. SportsPro
