Like Ichiro before him, Darvish – who already has a host of domestic endorsement deals ranging from coffee brand Dydo-D1 to pharmacy Hisamitsu – can expect to see his commercial potential rocket should he prove a success in the world’s most recognisable baseball league. As things stands, he is Nippon Professional Baseball’s highest-earning player, on a reported US$6 million per annum, and he is known for his humanitarian work, having donated ten per cent of his salary to the relief efforts after the recent devastation in Japan.
