Aside from the obvious commercial potential of a young Mexican driver competing at the front of Formula One – he was the first Mexican to stand on the podium in 41 years – Perez may ultimately be the catalyst for the return of Formula One to Mexico in the coming years. The country last staged a Grand Prix in 1992 but the crowd of around 150,000 that lined the streets of Perez’s home city of Guadalajara to watch him demonstrate a Formula One car in February gives some indication of the kind of interest ‘Checo’ is generating there, both for himself and the sport in which he plays an increasingly influential part.
