Gerry Lester "Bubba" Watson, Jr. is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour. One of the few left-handed golfers on tour, he is a major champion, the winner of the Masters Tournament in 2012.
Although his team at Arizona-based Pro-Sport Management had secured him a string of endorsements, notably Ping, Titleist, Marquis Jet and Richard Mille, long before he donned the green jacket at Augusta – he has, after all, been on the PGA Tour since 2006 – Bubba is now a name recognised around the world.
Having never taken a golf lesson in his life and with a swing only a mother could love, Watson, from Bagdad, Florida, was a most unorthodox winner of golf’s most traditional event. He also happens to own the original General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard television series and is a committed family man; an everyman kind of champion in a sport searching for US stars after years of reliance on the once relentless Tiger Woods.
With golf’s return to the Olympics regarded as an opportunity for a sport still seen in many ways as elitist to reach out to new markets and new fans, Watson is perhaps an ideal figurehead. Before that, the 33-year-old will likely form a significant – not to mention popular – part of the USA’s Ryder Cup team on home soil later this year. SportsPro
